The Mahakala Foundation provides funding to advance the Buddha’s teachings and preserve sacred heritage.
What funding types are available?
Depending on the project demands Mahakala gives loans or non-repayable grants to empower Buddhist institutions and individuals to foster wisdom and compassion worldwide.
Who can apply?
We invite Buddhist institutions and individuals dedicated to advancing the Dharma as interpreted by the Gelug, Sakya, Kagyu, or Nyingma traditions.
All applicants must operate as non-profit entities, committed to preserving and sharing these sacred lineages.
How do we fund?
- We provide non-repayable grants ranging from USD 2,500 to USD 50,000, as well as low-interest loans tailored to project needs.
- Funds are provided in installments, with the final payment released upon submission of a detailed completion report—due within two months of project completion—along with invoices and evidence of outcomes.
Prerequisites
To qualify, your project must
:
- Promote the Dharma as interpreted by the Gelug, Sakya, Kagyu, or Nyingma traditions, operating on a non-profit basis
- Focus on new construction, refurbishment, fittings, or furnishing of Dharma-teaching buildings, or the preservation of sacred shrines, stupas, statues, or community-centered objects.
- Contribute at decent percentage of total project costs through your own or third-party resources.
What We Need From You
Applications must be submitted by September 30 of the prior year and include:
- A clear outline of project benefits and impacts.
- An applicant profile detailing your history, leadership, and proven track record.
- A comprehensive project description, including sketches, plans, or models.
- A detailed cost breakdown supported by evidence.
- A financing plan, including repayment details if applicable.
- Three references from reputable third parties.
Further Funding Opportunities
Applicants whose prior projects stay within 5% of budgeted costs and 15% of planned timelines may reapply. Successful recipients will be connected to our network of additional donors for future support.
